I trained as a Sign Painter on leaving school in 1979 with Harmony Signs in Winner Street, Paignton. Which had been trading there since the sixties.
Following this, went on to Plymouth College to receive Distinctions in City and Guilds for sign writing and decorative painting.
This consisted of wood graining and marbling as well as signage. However, sadly it was coming into the age of the computer and in the about 1988 I bought one of the first vinyl cutters and scanners in the area. A Mac scanner was £1800 then I believe! A black only printer over £500 and fonts cost me £50 each.
Sign making had become computerised and very quickly the art of sign writing had all but died out really. Sign costs come down and it allowed the untrained to venture into what was, a craftsmen’s skill.
This has been the case ever since, now 30 years later it has become quite popular again.
There is so very little seen now , that many younger generations have no idea the skill even existed.

After many, many years of producing commercial signage, it was just time to move on. I still produce commercial signs, it pays the bills, but I needed to paint again.
To rekindle the love of the painted letter and decorated furniture.
So here we are, back where I started - a tin of paint, a hairy stick and a world of designs and colour schemes.

So what next ?
I have taken lettering to various objects I find - old tools, toolboxes, furniture and old cars to reproduce a feel of something old and vintage.
Using rusting techniques, distressing, and painted effects, I hope my items take on a little character, that is both unique and unusual.
Hopefully, you won’t even notice and my work just looks old.
Drawing from all sources i.e. 50s hot rods , bobbers plus 50’s and 60’s decor, I hope to produce pieces that can live in your home.
Every item is different and unlike vinyl lettering , a little bit of me goes into each stroke.

Vintage furniture and interesting finds.
I am always searching for things of interest. If I find something and can bear to part with it, it will be put into our shop area or on Ebay.
There is a feed from Ebay on this site so you can browse here first, without trawling through the Ebay adverts.

Thanks for looking and if you want something of your own painting, call me. Commissions undertaken.
